Gary Kocharian

Neurosurgeon

Dr. Gary Kocharian is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with extensive expertise in the minimally invasive treatment of both brain and spine conditions. His clinical focus includes the surgical and endovascular management of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), fistulas, stroke, and carotid artery disease. He also specializes in the treatment of brain and spine tumors, and offers both open and minimally invasive surgical solutions for degenerative spine disease.

Dr. Kocharian’s approach to care is highly personal and patient-centered, tailoring each treatment plan based on the individual’s needs. He places a strong emphasis on building meaningful relationships with patients and their families, guiding them through their diagnosis and treatment with empathy and expertise.

Education & Training:

  • Completed his fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery and residency in neurological surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical College.
  • Received his medical degree from the Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, NY.
  • Earned a Bachelor of Arts in Cell Biology and Neuroscience, with a minor in French, from Rutgers University Honors College, graduating summa cum laude.

Dr. Kocharian has published extensively on topics including intra-arterial chemotherapy, middle meningeal artery embolization, and endovascular treatments for brain aneurysms. His research background includes molecular neurosurgery and gene therapy techniques.

He has held leadership roles in both academic and volunteer settings, including serving as President of the Weill Cornell chapter of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and as Co-Director of a student-run mental health clinic for uninsured patients in New York City.

Multilingual and musically inclined, Dr. Kocharian is fluent in French and Armenian and speaks conversational Spanish and Russian. Outside the operating room, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, grilling, practicing yoga, running, cycling, and playing guitar.
